Carpetbagger Definition

2016-10-30 00:18:10 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

After the "War of Northern Aggression" aka "the Civil War" ... Homes and land in "the losing states" were assessed with Taxes that post-war southerners couldn't afford. Many profit seeking scam artists, , would show up at an auction and buy Plantations, land, furnishings, etc, for mere Pennies... (really!)... and throw the former owners (usually women with children) out. In the South, "Carpetbagger!" is the same as "thief".... and in some places, carrying one was a good way to get shot...

... oh. never mind, I like Bigrobs answer better... and it's even in clear English... forget I even touched the keyboard...

They were the businessmen who came to the South from the North following the War between the States. They were the guys who would show up with a "carpetbag" (a large satchel made of cloth that looked like it was made from a Persian rug,) full of money and try to buy farms and plantations from the war-ravaged survivors. They preyed on the helpless and took advantage at every turn. They were the vultures that follow war and scavenge. That IS what the word means. It is used today to reflect upon someone's character as well as to describe similar behavior.

People like this are why many Southerners still think that damn and yankee are one word.
