This is an oddly phrased question. Do you need to go as a fairy or are you a fairy? Did they give you guidelines of dress on the invite, i.e., formal, casual, etc?
In general, I always try to dress nicer than I think others will be dressed. I especially think men can get away with being over-dressed at a party, especially Gay men - everyone expects them to be too fabulous.
If you meant that you have to go dressed as fairy, i.e., Tinkerbell, then get some wings from a costume shop and put them on with a nice suit and a really colourful whimsical tie. Also, wear a little masquerade mask (with sparkle).
Ah-hah, my DH just walked in the room and told me that in Britain "fancy dress" means costume - sorry for my confusion.

Let me get this straight (no pun intended)...you are going to a dress party as a "fairy"??????? Okeeee. Well, a flowing white gown with a wand and maybe fairy dust sprinkled in your hair. Now there's a picture! Please be sure to take one and post it in place of the avatar.

I love your idea already. Just go for the usual characteristics of a normal fairy but over exagerate it...like bigger rosier cheeks and sparkly wings...send me a picture of it!!!!!!
