i prefer a hibachi place where they cook the food in front of you and you get it hot off the grill, that way, you know there is nobody spitting on your food or anything

The problem with buffets is that the quality of the food tends to suffer when it sits around for a long time. Also, my experience tells me that the quality of buffet food isnt' as good to begin with (as it is for entrees). So I prefer ordering off the menu.
On the other hand, if you're short on cash and want a lot of food, then good buffets do offer a bargain... (But don't forget to tip the waiters who remove the dishes.)

I prefer a buffet. It's self-service so you don't have to wait around for a waiter. The food is great because there are a lot of variety. It's faster too because you can just get the food and eat and go home anytime you like. (No waiting for the chef to cook). The price is cheap too because it's a buffet!

Restaurant:
The service is better if not quite as fast. Buffets encourage over eating, pricey considering most people go when they are starving, which means you get full fast. The price is generally more expensive, and Although I save time too, I still like the old fashioned idea of helping out the franchise. Corporations make too much as it is. They need to start sharing the wealth with the little guys. They are killing off everyone.

I think it depends on what kind of buffet your talking about....if you talking about a Sunday Brunch Buffet like at Dukes in Waikiki then yumm..its delicious. But if you talking about a place like "hometown Buffet" (thank God we don't have them here.. NO WAY. On a visit to the mainland I was taken there and the kids were running around eating off the serving spoons..sneezing going into the food, it was disgusting and the food was really low grade.
I would rather go to a place and sit down and be served a hot meal of my choice. Aloha

I perfer Buffet because you get a variety of what you want and it is low in price. You serve yourself so you can put as much as you want on your plate and if the first round didnt fill you up, you can always go back and no extra charge.
And as for the one who said you do not know how long the food has been out and who is touching it, you do not know that coming out of the resturant because you are not in the kitchen watching them cook it and also they could have gave you a old order and heated it up like it just got cooked. They both have the same risks just different prices and settings.

Depends on the kind of food we are into on a particular day and what they offer. Chinese Buffets are usually a very good choice for both food and price. I generally perfer buffets for the choice of different foods.

When I plan on eating only one meal for that day then I go to a buffet place. Otherwise, I choose going to a restaurant for a few reasons: I won't eat so much, I get waited on and served, usually the atmosphere is less noisy and everything appears cleaner (dishes, silverware, tables, chairs etc).

Prefer a buffet for breakfast or lunch. It's quick, large choice of food, don't have to wait for the wait staff to come and take your order.
However , when I'm going to dinner with someone or taking someone out I prefer a restaurant. Time for a leisurely meal, to talk, enjoy the food and the ambience.

resturant, why? no body is bending over coughing and gagging on the food, dropping hair, and fingering my food. food quality i think is better, service , that is to be desired, @ both choices.. time, buffet is faster, price, eat cheap go w/buffet, prices varies go rest.
restrooms are also cleaner in a resturant, and people control their screaming kids better.
