Me and my roommate had this discussion this morning and have come up with two hypothesis.
1) Waffle house buildings are incapable of having snow on them. This hypothesis suggests that when a waffle house comes into contact with frozen water, a chemical reaction occurs that causes it to simply fall apart. Because of this, if a waffle house were to be built in the north, it would simply fail to exist after a snow fall. This is also part of the reason why Southerners go crazy when ever there is a snow fall. They don't know how to drive in snow, they don't have proper winter jackets, and they start to starve because they have no waffles. Reconstruction must start immediately.
2) The second hypothesis is the opposite of this. This hypothesis states that Waffle houses are the only buildings in the south that are capable of withstanding any amount of snow. They act as a bastion in the case of snow, offering protection for the Southerners. When a snow fall occurs, the reason there are so many car accidents is due to the fact everyone is rushing to the Waffle houses, the only structure still standing. A giant waffle party then happens before rebuilding must start. Festivities usually last until the snow melts. The reason that there are no Waffle Houses in the north is because all Northern buildings can withstand snow. We have other breakfast places such as Village Inn where we can procure morning foods.
In order to test the validity of these hypothesis, we must transfer to the south where it is warm and there is no snow. Winter has begun.

Probably for the same reason that none exist here in the West. I lived in Indiana for a while, went to Waffle House a couple times and was not that impressed.

Because people in the North seem a tad bit more sophisticated and they wouldn't enjoy going to a greasy awful waffle house!

Because up north they don't know what good food is and instead of good tasting waffles they like to eat pancake that are burnt on the bottom and saturate it with syrup to cover up how bad it really taste.

we do have a waffle house in the north it is right beside dunken doughnuts i have never been inside of it but i always see it when i go to targets or when i go to eb games so there is a waffle house in the north

Their corporate headquarters are in Atlanta GA. Perhaps they started in the South and are working their way north. You should go eat there at least once. It's an experience! Pecan waffles, eggs and bacon at 4am....can't beat that!!!!!

I'm from the North but have lived in the South now for 20 years...I love the South...but the "Awful House" restaurants are an abomination and embarrassment!

Because you can't operate an "Awful House" without serving grits, and yankees still haven't learned to eat grits! LOL
