For myself, as a teacher, I don't think it is so much of a fear. My first year of teaching it was fear. I remember I didn't sleep the night before due to the anticipation and I worried that I wouldn't do a good job because I still had so much to learn. I also worried about discipline. Now that I have a few years under my belt, it is not so much a fear anymore. I know that I can handle anything thrown my way and I am well prepared to teach. I still get very little sleep the night before, but it is because I am so excited to see the new bunch of faces and get to know each and every one of them.

This is my fifth year teaching and the most scariest thing I think is not knowing your students yet in term of academics. You may know how they did on last year's assessments but that's just knowing them on paper. It takes a good 1-2 months to finally know what they are missing and what they are not understanding (as a whole class that is). What's scary is that you have to begin teaching your grade level material right away because of standardized testing and long range plans. For example, when you finally figure out that, they aren't really understanding basic addition facts and you are trying to teach them two digit addition...it throws off your schedule because you have no choice but to go back and fill in the backs. Sometimes I wish I could teach to the students needs rather than trying to teach set standards to the trimester. That way I can meet student needs instead having a class full of confused students because I have to keep moving on for time's sake.

I don't think I've ever been really scared at the beginning of the school year (except maybe my freshman year of college). I have always looked forward to the first day with great excitement, wondering who would be in my class and what kind of projects I would do. As a teacher (as I am now), I find myself still very excited. I can't wait to start over, to put up new decorations, meet my new students. It's a great thing about school, each year you can reinvent yourself, you can start over fresh. The countdown has begun - I'm allowed into my classroom tomorrow, and school starts in 11 days (including weekends) =)

The scariest thing to me in starting a new year (as a teacher) is having the younger brothers and sisters of all my problem children from last year!

I'm a middle school teacher, and I'm always a bit timid about the first few days, hoping that I have nice kids :) That sounds kinda cheesy, I know, but I'm a special education teacher and about every other year I get some VERY challenging students (emotionally handicapped). For some reason, I usually get along with these kids but they have horrible peer issues....it makes for a long year....

As an elementary school teacher, what I fear the most are new kids from OTHER schools. Schools round here tend to dump kids with serious behavior problems on other local schools, so whenever there's a new kid... watch out!

getting to get put in a social class all over again and no matter what you do or say, you are stuck in that class for that whole year and you can never get popular or cool.
