Eastman and Laird had read both X-Men and Frank Miller's Ronin comic books. They doodled a sketch of a turtle and labeled in teen age mutant (From the X-Men) Ninja (from Miller) Turtle (From .....I don't know)
The first issue was funny....and the wrong size. (It was printed the size of newspaper supliment ads)
They made very little money off the first issue, even though it sold out.
They reprinted it...again and again....created many other issues, helped make a cartoon, a movie series and a second cartoon series.
bottom line...
Michaelangelo is a party dude!

leonardo - blue mask - swords
donatello - purple - bow
michelangelo - orange - numchucks
raphael - red -sais
splinter - rat turned mutant(or vise versa in 80's series)
shredder - bad guy
the foot - shedder's henchman(robots in the 80's)
the brain - bad guy - shedder's "boss"(80's)
april - hot tv reporter - turtles friend
casey jones - good guy in bad way - fights with sporting equipment
comic book turned into tv series in the 80's many varieties of action figures(some cool some stupid) became a movie blockbuster, then two sequels followed(second barely ok, third crap) at least two video games and arcade.
re-released as cartoon series and more and more toys followed

There the international's maximum fearsome battling beings......they're turtles in a 1/2 shell, and they are eco-friendly......even as the evil shredder attacks, those turtle boys do not provide them no slack.

Their names were based on 4 of the greatest artists of all time: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni) , Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi) & Raphael. :)
