Some are, some aren't. The zoo by me is full of animals that would not be able to live in the wild for some reason or another.

Depends on the Zoo. Our zoo is awful. It is an inner city zoo with only 23 acres. Some zoos have 10 acres for one exhibit! SanDiego Zoo has a total of 1900 acres.
I dont visit our area zoo anymore...not until they make the place bigger and better for the animals. And with no room to expand, I dont see that happening.

Their Polar Bears are green, and all they do is pace back and forth (a sign of stress) . Their water is nasty looking. The Snow Leopards have no area to run around and be natural. They are in basically a dark dog kennel with an elevated concrete sleeping pad.

I have seen video of the San Diego Zoo my sis brought back...that place is amazing. And I hear the Zoo that Jack Hannah runs is pretty good too..cant remeber if it was Cleveland or someplace in Fl. Toronto Zoo is nice too.

Not in an "RSPCA" kind of way... The only two zoos I have been to in Australia are great examples of the two extremes of zoo-life: Taronga is horrible and cramped, and the animals (especially Giraffes and Tigers) are miserable. Western Plains zoo on the other hand has done an amazing job replicating acres and acres of natural habitat, and have some of the best breeding programs in the world...

I think that as long as the animals and not the human spectators are the focus, most Zoos are perfectly humane.

It depends on the zoo. I have seen some that were like Club Med for critters, life expectancies much longer than in the wild . I have seen others that were, well I guess you could say more like the cheap motel version. I think it also depends on if the animal was raised by people or caught wild. Many zoo animals were once the pets of idgits that thought it would be fun to have a big cat or monkey or snake. For these critters it would be inhumane to put them in the wild.

If all animals are in exhibits which are like their natural habit, zoos are absolutely fine; they give people the chance to study and learn about animals. If animals are kept in cages, zoos are inhumane and cruel. No animal should have to live in a cage 24/7. Would you like to live in a cage every day of your life? There have been some major improvements, for the most part, in a lot of zoos. Fewer animals are kept in cages, and more in proper exhibits. And I, for one, am glad.

YES and NO.. I have been to many that I would never go back again because I see the poor animals stuck in places that are far from being in a (their) real habitat.

Fortunately, many zoos(San Diego is one) have made great strides in providing for the animals a natural habitat that they would ALMOST find in the wild.

no i don't think they are. Some are trying to breed the animals to try and stop them from going extinct and most of the zoos round the world are trying to make the enclosures bigger so the animals have bigger spaces to live in and also they get fed everyday and they don't have to worry about poachers and other animals trying to kill them.

How many animals in the wild have their food provided for them? How many animals in the wild have veterinary care (for free)? How many wild animals have secure shelter? How many animals in the wild always have a reliable source of water?

And we call the animals in the zoo dumb!
