The Black Plague. The initial outbreak was in the 14th century yet recurring outbreaks were common for hundreds of years thereafter. The 1600's suffered a couple notable outbreaks in both England and Italy.

It could of been that when the men came back from war, there was a thing called the baby boom era. You can just guess what happened from the title. There was just a surge of sex that happened when they got home. There wouldn't of been such an urge after they had released their tension after 10 years.
