ok you have to stay on a path if you get off the path you could mess with time, and theres like these time waves where each time wave some thing changes

ok the movie is recent but when some one steped off the path they steped on a butterfly and it messed with time and when they go back things start changeing in waves untill they go back to fix it

The movie is "Sound of Thunder". A group of filthy rich guys went on a tour back in time. One of the Characters swayed off the path they had to follow. Without realizing it he stepped on and killed a prehistoric butterfly. This upset the balance of the current world and all these weird creatures started appearing in the present day. Those bat-like creatures gave me the creeps!

The "Butterfly Effect" was the movie, however, the premise for the movie came from a story called "The sound of Thunder" that I read when I was a kid...

It kind of sounds like the Butterfly Effect with the whole messing with time thing, and its kind of recent. but other things you described, lead me to doubt that its the movie you're asking about.
Plot Outline: A young man (Kutcher) blocks out harmful memories of significant events of his life. As he grows up, he finds a way to remember these lost memories and a supernatural way to alter his life.
