I had a 68, it had a 302 (not the original motor) you have a 289 if its a V8 or a 6 cylinder 200ci? Replace points, plugs, plug wires if they are old, you need a feeler guage to set the points and a spark plug gapping tool to gap the plugs. You will need a timing light to set the timing. It changes when the point gap changes or if the timing chain has a little slop in it. All the specs for these settings are given in the manual. I find the best manual to buy is the Haynes manual. http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001

When you replace the points, replace the cap and rotor too. Search doing tuneups on point ignition systems. There must be a ton of info on old mustangs on the net. Check the carburator choke for proper operation, replace air and fuel filters, pcv valve if it has one and breather element. Thats all I can think of.

you need a set of points, a timing gun, spark plugs, distributor cap.

remove rotor cap, replace points with new ones, you need to calibrate the new one. replace distributor cap, change plugs, Loosen the distributor by untightening a bolt that hold it down,

check the timing with timing light by turning the car on, and look for the numbers by the crankshaft, adjust the distributor until it line lines up with the proper number. You should be able to find the right rpm from a book or autoparts place may tell you.

sounds like an rather extreme priced plan. 9k for only a shell? more effective efficient be mint. you may want to be shocked at how a lot rust those issues can conceal. you'll spend large greenbacks merely on a good engine and the disc brake conversion. looking trim elements in good difficulty is going to be a project besides. If funds is not any merchandise, I say bypass for it. good luck
