I don't really compare the two, they are both valid forms of artistic expression in my opinion. I write music, lyrics and poetry. Poetry helps you write the words in a Rhythmical way that fits well with music. I write Ballad and Freestyle poetry. I do find that you can go into much more detail with poetry though.

I would compare music to poetry by when your writing a poem your sending a message through the words and trying to touch someone, and most songs originate from poetry, because music sends across a message also. They are different by a poem can be seen as a way to get across a deeper message. My mother is a poet, and she has said many times that a poet puts their heart out on paper. I can see music artists doing this also.

I believe that some poetry is music (i.e. Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten). Poetry has a nice flow to it and uses unique words, phrases, and descriptions to identify the meaning. Some music (like rap) is not poetry; it has a rhythm, but the words aren't expressed as uniquely as poetry.

Poetry is more deep than music because it doesnt have the crappy Music mixed in with it, it's a lot better read then sang, and i find that it's a lot more meaningful, poetry is better off kept quiet...

poetry and music are similar in many ways, but i would think that the best way to compare them is that both poetry and music speak to people, i mean, people find comfort in listing reading and writing poetry but also people find comfort in writing songs and listing to them.

Most popular music we listen to has lyrics, so I'd say the only real difference is that poetry doesn't involve musical instruments.

Music (lyrics) are poetry ! I am a poet and i listen to alot of music and it all strikes me as poetry mostly prose... its just the forming of words that connects the individual to the rhythm and rhyme that we today call hip hop, rock , r&b, jazz..and classical

I don't care for poetry, but I can find so much depth and meaning behind lyrics. They take you to places that you can never be by yourself. They revive memories and feelings, they inspire. It's a creative outlet, and a window to heaven

all lyrics are essentially poetry it is just that we have a predisposed expectation of what we THINK poetry is or should be. there is no rule to verse, prose, etc. what we write down in passion, however true or however fake, those words are poetic.
