Yes it is a great Idea.
I think more importantly, making drugs illegal is not American.
"Prohibition makes a crime of something which is not a crime." Abe Lincoln.
It's true. Freedom to do things that please everyone is not freedom.
People who support the drug laws are some of the most ignorant people I have met.

I think making marijuana illegal is beyond the powers given to the Constitution by the government, as it is not necessary and proper to do so, especially considering that cigarettes are legal, and if they made them illegal, they would run into people waving the Constitution in protest.
As for other drugs, some of them are so dangerous it is necessary and proper to restrict them... you wouldn't let people take arsenic for fun.
Also, even if tobacco should remain legal, the additives in it should not.
As a side note, I think making prostitution legal could be bad, because we live in a society of underemployment... where people are expected to have a job to live, but businesses are not expected to make room for everyone. Too many women would be expected to become prostitutes, it could end up being very sad.

There are two "crimes" I've always felt should be legalized.
1) Prostitution: this is a victimless crime where no one is getting harmed (what pimps do excluded). It would be better to legalize it, make sure the prostitutes are given frequent exams for STD's, Aids, etc. Then, tax the prostitutes income so the country can benefit and justify the legalization.
2) Marajuana: Let people who want to smoke it, smoke it without fear of getting busted. Control marajuana so it can be taxed by the government so, again, the government benefits from it's legalization.
Plus, law enforcement is overburdened trying to arrest people who have broken BOTH these laws and could be freed up to be best used in other areas of crime prevention.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Personally I don't like the term 'legalize'. For some reason people seem to think that legalize is synonymous with 'promote' or that to 'legalize' something is to also advocate.
The proper term is to 'de-criminalize'. As you alluded to, how can there be a crime without a victim? Drugs do not 'do' anything on their own. Some people can handle them responsibly, others can't.
But what is a crime?
Lets define criminal acts in two ways 'crime' and 'tort'. I define them as:
A crime is any action taken by an individual wherein the individual intentionally initiates physical force, fraud, or theft which results in damage to another individual or damage or loss of another individual's property without the consent of that individual.
Tort is any unintentional action that results in damage to another individual or damage or loss of another individual's property.

No, the crime rate would rapidly increase before a gradual decrease. Because drugs would become readily availible, EVERY Tom, Dick or Harry would be after them, previous user or not. Don't hide behind the "good for America" defense. Go smoke some weed, it's cool. I do, too. Usually it in't to big a deal to do it in a place you won;t get arrested. It's an unconvincing arguement that won't ever get through the doors of Congress.

Very perceptive, Chris:
Take a look at the book "Licit and Illicit Drugs", edited by the very people who publish Consumer Reports. They examine all drugs, including nicotine, caffine and alcohol. Their conclusion is that no drugs ever posed a problem to SOCIETY until they were illegalized.
Think about it; drug dealers are in it for profit. Illegalization drives the price up. (= more profit).
There s alot more interesting stuff between those covers, too, including the truth about "heroin overdose". (no such thing....)

I think that legalizing drugs would be a good idea, and a bad idea. It depends on what kind of drugs they are legalizing. If people had medical problems then they should legalize the drug they need for the medical problem that they have. As for stuff like crack and cocaine i do not think that they should legalize stuff that will just be for personal use.

I think the only thing that should be legalized is marijuana. No one has ever died from that, and it does not give you lung cancer because it does not have all the chemicals in them. If they want people to live, they should make alcohal illegal and cigerettes and legalize the **** that won't kill yah.

specific drugs would desire to be criminal. protecting drugs unlawful no longer purely wastes billions of greenbacks on the "Drug conflict." notwithstanding it additionally reasons people who decide directly to place those components into their own bodies to be likened with criminals. we live in a us of a that brags approximately being "unfastened" as quickly as we can't even decide on if we would desire to positioned something into our bodies, or maybe strengthen a plant. Legalizing drugs will take the criminal area out of the drug commerce, as a results of fact if drugs have been criminal, there would be no money to make with the aid of trafficking drugs. additionally the medicine would be much less costly and this would ward off people who're addicted from resorting to an entire life of crime and finally robbing others to assist their habit(specific i comprehend dependancy is detrimental). i've got confidence that drugs would desire to be criminal, yet with a view to get them you will desire to speak with a doctor who show you how to comprehend the consequence of the drug, and what it relatively is going to do to you short and long term. then you rather can get a subscription and bypass to a pharmacy and yet a miles less costly and organic drug. this would ward off human beings from dying with the aid of unpure drugs. additionally the cheapness will cut back crime as human beings wont would desire to motel to theft. and then throw each and every of the tax sales our us of a ought to get on good of that, and its a superb concept.

Some yes, some no.
If people want to get high, they will find a way. So, why not just make it legal and somewhat controlled. Look at the Netherlands....
