Depends ao your Local/County/State requirements..For example, in Ohio you would not be required to have a license on the state, county, or local level.
Check out http://www.contractors-license.org/. You'll get a basic idea of what is required. You can also contact your county courthouse and local municipal office to find out local requirements.
Hope this helps.

Yes most cities require a business license(as well as some counties) It's all due to pressure from the competition, and the money collected in liscense fees.
In most cases you would go to the city Inspection department for a liscense. And the courthouse for a county liscense if required.
First find out what the requirements are and go from there.
Usually you have o obtain a bond which is about 75 to 100 annually for a 5000 dollar bond (in Georgia)This only covers the local goverment in case they are sued by one of your customers due to your work. Before starting you should obtain liability and shop for it, because it varries from company to company. THe last policy I brought was 15 yrs ago . 300,000 costs me 300 a year, so I amnot up todate on that. You need liability because with at least 300,000, even 100,000 would protect you with legal help in the event of a suit. And if you ar ein business long you may wellbe facing a suit for some reason, right or wrong. It's all lawyers, not right or wrong who decide suits. So it's best to protect your self to avoid paying for the rest of your life for something you may not be guility of or could not avoid such as a lousy employee. If you hire employees you are into the tax, workers comp, and ss business and it can be difficult. If you hav eot have help but cannot afford the entire busines route got he tempory employee route. you can run the people of your choice though a temp company and still use them. This keeps all of the paper work like taxes and SS. on them for which they may be better equiped. Your employees would be theirs and you write the temp service one check a week or month. If yuo are starting a one man business you still need the liability for protection.

It depends on how you want to operate. If you are a sole proprietorship, then you would need to obtain an occupational license from the jurisdiction (city/county) you live in. If you want to create a legal entity with which to do business, you would need to decide if you want to incorporate or form a limited liability company, and if so file the necessary paperwork with your state's Division of Corporations. Then you would have to obtain occupational licenses on your local level. There are companies out there that will help you form your business if you are unsure of how to do it. One of my favorites is www.incorporate.com
