What is the difference between a 4 wheel drive vehicle and an all wheel drive vehicle

Here is the simple answer. A 4 wheel drive vehicle has a selection switch that allows the driver to select whether or not they want to use 4 wheel drive. An All Wheel drive vehicle is normally operating under the power of two wheels, but if the computer senses a wheel slipping, it will transfer the power to the other two wheels automatically, making it operate in 4 wheel mode. AWD requires no driver input, a computer handles the engagement. Four wheel drive requires driver input, All Wheel drive requires no driver input.

With a 4 wheel drive you have the option of having it in 2 wheel.

4 wheel drive vehicle have the ability to drive with either all 4 wheels or with only 2. All wheel drive vehicles drive with all four wheels all the time.

u mean a 2 wheel drive and an all wheel drive? a 2 wheel means only 2 wheels have power to turn while the other 2 just get pushed along. all wheel measn all 4 wheels get power to turn,

Rhino man is wrong. My Subaru all wheel drive legacy is in FWD right now. 4wd vehicles will apply power 50/50 between front and rear. AWD vehicles devided 80:20 Front:Rear going down the road. When the traction control kicks in, it changes to 60:40 Front:Rear

4 wheel , you can take it out, all wheel you can't, it's always in 4 wheel.

AWD normally is full-time on on off feature and 4WD normally has on off high low features but these rules cross one-another often
