I would NOT pump and dump. There is most likely no reason for it. For most moms, caffeine is not a problem as long as baby is over 6 mos of age.

Since your baby is young, there might be some sensitivity at this young age. Newborns have a much harder time metabolizing caffeine than older infants...it takes them longer. (Preterm or ill infants might also have more problems.) If you drank caffeine while you were pregnant, there is LESS of a chance that baby will have any problems with you drinking it while nursing.

Watch for signs of your baby seeming particularly wakeful or fussy after you have caffeine. If you see these symptoms and there is a significant amount of caffeine in your diet, you might want to cut back or stop the caffeine for 2-3 weeks to see if it makes a difference. (For your own sake, if you do cut out caffeine, decrease your consumption slowly since abruptly stopping caffeine can result in headaches!)

Caffeine is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. Per Medications and Mother's Milk (Hale 2002, p. 100-102) caffeine is in Lactation Risk Category L2 (safer); milk levels are quite low (0.06-1.5% of maternal dose) and usually peak 1 hour after ingestion. One study has indicated that chronic coffee drinking might decrease iron content of breastmilk (Nehlig & Debry, 1994).

The equivalent of five 5-oz cups of coffee per day is considered safe for most moms. Again, since your baby is very young I'd suggest not having THAT much right now.

If you are really worried, you can also look for caffeine-free versions of many sodas.

Hope that helps!

ALSO.....
Back to add that, if you should choose to drink alcohol while nursing, you DO NOT NEED TO PUMP AND DUMP as someone mentioned.

AND.....
There is usually no reason for you to avoid any particular foods while nursing.

Oh, gosh, honey.

No. No, drinking a pop will not give your baby gas.

Caffine actually has a reverse effect on small children and can make them sleepy. Pop gives adults gas because they ingest the bubbles. Bubbles don't make it into breastmilk.

However: avoid the following: spinach, cabbage, peas, brussles sprouts, broccoli and culiflower. I learned the hard way. My first was so colicy she didn't sleep for more than a half hour at a time for the 1st 5 mos.
With my second, I started out without these, and he did fine. I decided to test it one night and had a little broccoli, and we were up for 36 hours.
My son is 8 mos now, and still the only veggies I eat are lettuce, corn and carrots.

If you do have something your baby shouldn't have (ie: more than two glasses of wine) nurse the baby right away, so he eats before it hits your breastmilk and won't be hungry for awhile. Pump about an hour later and disgard it (or give it to your husband. ;) ) And one hour per alcoholic drink after that you'll be fine to nurse again.

Oh, and for when gas does hit, always keep Mylicon in the house. Several bottles. They make a non-staining formula now, which is great. And spring for the real Mylicon. I don't know what the excipients (non-active ingredients) are, but they make a difference. The store brands don't cut it.

Drinking Soda While Breastfeeding

I am a lactation educator and passed my test recently so I have the most current up to date info. But even if I didn't, common sense should tell these naysayers that thousands of women drink soda with no problems. Soda is not some sort of toxic sludge, it's basically water, carbon dioxide, flavoring and coloring and sugar. Not the best thing for you, but it's not like she's drinking Everclear. Caffeine DOES pass into breastmilk but the amount in soda is lower than coffee or tea but one cup of coffee, tea or soda is fine.

You DO NOT have to pump. You DO NOT have to worry about soda that contains sugar or caffeine (or artificial sweetener), unless that you are drinking a six pack all day every day. One soda with meals if you desire is fine although a better choice is water, milk or juice. If all you drink is soda, all day long, try to start weaning yourself and adding those flavored fizzy waters they have at the supermarket, or at least clear sodas without so much artificial flavoring and coloring.

The soda does not give baby gas. The sugar, caffeine or plethora of other additives in the soda may cause gas by tummy upset though.

The caffeine is bad, but it's also bad for milk supply. The carbonation in soda will not cause gas, as it does not enter your bloodstream.

And a few sips of soda will not hurt. I always use the phrase; moderation is key. Meaning, there's very little that will cause alot of problems unless you take it in large amounts. If there is a problem, cut back on the soda to judge whether that is the cuplrit.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHLt3

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

any caffeine affects the milk and stays there for a while... I wouldn't worry about some caffeine, just try not to do it. I had no problem with my three and I drank pop. you can also get gas drops if the baby is gassy.

anything you eat or drink will go straight to the baby while breastfeeding. if your worried about the baby being colic or gassy you can give them baby gas drops ( usually sold by the baby Tylenol ). and be sure to burp them at least twice.
