Sorry danzer^, but you're incorrect. Guiding Light has been on TV the longest & here's proof:

The longest running drama ever, Guiding Light has entertained radio and television fans for 66 years. Set in the fictional city of Springfield, this drama focuses on the complex lives of the close-knit Bauer, Spaulding, Lewis, Marler and Cooper families.

I think the Guiding Light and As The World Turns are two shows that has been on since the 50's-respectfully.
Yeah, they are two soaps but, they are the longest.
In cartoons, The Simpson's (animated) and in westerns, that would have to be Gunsmoke.
I think for cop shows/drama, that would be Hawaii 5-0.
For variety show, that would have to be The Ed Sullivan Show and for night time talk show, that would have to be The Tonight Show, which has had Jack Paar, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson (and the thief who was not supposed to have it) Jay Leno.
These are some of the longest running shows in those catagories.

Isn't it That 70s show?? Full House is definatley up there, but I do know the Simpsons is the longest running cartoon show.

Sesame Street has lasted a pretty long time, I used to love that show!

The world's longest running TV show is "Meet the Press". It began on NBC on November 6th, 1947, and has been running in the USA for 55 years, non-stop!

Meet the Press has been running since 1947. In '48 it aired regularly. It's now on MSNBC.
MASH ran for 11 years.
The Simsons has been running since 1989.
Guiding Light has been on since like 1952.
