How do you feel about those places where there are piles and piles of different food and they offer a menu that entitle you to eat all you can.

There is a great deal of waste in those places because some think they should pig in several times and just pile the food in their plates and leave most of it untouched. Then return and do the same thing! I think it is outrageous and a lack of awareness that there are so many people starving in the world who could use that food. Of course once it has been in your plate it cannot be served again. I believe this is one of the greatest waste in America. What do you think ?

I agree it is a waste. However, I do not go because I don't find these places to be a bargain. Most of the stuff served at these places are frozen microwaveable garbage. You get all you can eat, but all of it is lousy so for a low price you get a ton of garbage. I would rather spend the extra money and get a quality meal that actually taste good even though the portions are a lot smaller.
In addition you have to consider the class of people who go to these type of places. People who don't care about themselves or how they look to other people are not going to care about wasting food or about other people.

Yes it is a waste of food ( I won't say good food b/c sometimes it is so bad my cats wouldn't eat it). Then again, if your eyes aren't bigger than your stomach, it is ok with me. Try some of those Vegas breakfast buffets, and dang, after a night of gambling and dancing, and lap dancing, that greasy food will taste as good as a filet at Ruth's Chris. Just remember, eat in moderation, and take your time, that is the only way you can get your money's worth.
Now, if you are talking about an all-you-can-eat at some place like Shoney's, (if they have one) then I hope that all that food comes back out in less than an hour, and your day of football watching is spent dropping the kids off at the pool.

all u can eat places certainly ARE a waste...in more ways than one! People waste food, just like you say. Even more, they eat beyond what they need or should eat. Americans are OBESE! FAT! Part of the reason is the lack of exercise and hard work, but I surely think it is primarily from over eating. Personally, I love dining in a restaurant that gives proper portions of GOOD...no, make that GREAT food. Reasonable portions and a rounded out menu is just perfect. Fellow Americans...and anyone else gouging on food, save stuffing yourself for Thanksgiving...if you MUST.

I think exactly the same thing. I never waste anything, and think it's ridiculous how much gets wasted. There must be piles and piles a day that just gets thrown away. I really dont think many people think about it to be honest, but resturants should take more responsibility and do something about the waste... It really wouldn't take much for them to send it to where its needed. Or to make people more aware.

I think they are gross. Not only do people over eat, but all of the people that touch the utensils without washing their hands is nasty. I hate when (in the past) little kids touch the food and put it back on there. All of the expectorants on the food is enough to make me wanna barf. I just don't "do" the all you can eat thing. But, yes it is a big waste too. But, the restaurants don't think of it that way. They are making a huge profit. You pay 7.99-10.99 on average for buffet and the cost of the food on the buffet is well under that.

I think buffets tend to bring out the worst in people - especially really pricey buffets. My in-laws live in Las Vegas, and so when we visit them, they like to go out to buffets - and it's horrifying to watch normally sane people force themselves to devour an entire plate of shrimp and crab legs because those are the priciest items being served, and they're trying to get "their money's worth" from the buffet experience. Why do people suddenly feel compelled to gorge themselves on seafood?

And then, of course, there is the massive amount of waste that goes into each meal service. I wonder if anyone outside of the restaurant industry keeps statistics on just how much waste is generated per meal service - because it's normally in the restaurant's best interest to keep waste (and therefore, cost) as low as possible, but in the buffet industry, I wonder how they approach that...

If a person is careful they can enjoy an all you can eat restaurant without making a pig out of themselves!
My rule of thumb is only put on your plate what you will definitely eat! If I want to try a new dish I only put a tiny bit on my plate and then if I do not like it I have not wasted anything!

no no no. It's a good thing. You see, if you are in control of how much food you get, then you don't have to waste it. Only idiots get what they cannot eat. When the restaurant is in charge of serving size, you may get a lot more than you want. Let's just ban the dumb*sses from buffets.

Gross and sicko. Although I don't care if the fat wal-mart pigs go there to eat all they can stuff into themselves. I think it is the worst thing ever. If the buffet gets too busy for the cook, then he sends it out half cooked or burned or microwaved from a few days ago. A major health issue to me - between this and the pigs eating there.

I agree, I think people should just take what they can consume, then if they're still hungry, then go back to get more food. although most canadians do that, we don't waste a lot of food here in canada. people just take what they can eat. But yeah I agree with you, people shouldn't waste all that food.
