i like chess too, but everybody thinks it boring
Buy a computer chess game.
You will love it, you will learn it yourself, and get to know better moves.
Its never the same as playing with someone, but you will learn
good moves, when you find someone who likes it

One thing I would not recommend is getting a computer chess programme. You may think it will help you improve but getting whupped 20 times in a row is not fun and you may lose interest. Chess programmes are always either way too good or to bad for a good game. Instead there are plenty of Internet chess clubs where you could play against REAL PEOPLE. This is what will help you more than anything is games against human opponents. My favourite is gameknot.com. It's free and as you get better you will be given a rating as an indication of how good you are. If you want a good book, Complete Idiots Guide To Chess (don't get put off by the title, it's really good) by Patrick Wolff taught me all the basics of the different aspects of the game. It's a good read and is useful for most different strengths of players. Hope this helped.

The best starting book I ever found was "Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess." It is a great introduction to how the pieces move and shows you how to use the pieces together with picture problems you solve as you go.

For tips, get Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess or Google "chess" for a plethora of sites. I recommend you try http://www.freechess.org for online play. Once you create your free account, download a free Windows interface from http://www.babaschess.net to avoid having to use a browser for online play. This will also eliminate any pop-ups and ads from interfering like they do at other popular sites.

If you have the $$$, i'd suggest getting a computer program that will teach you like Chessmaster or Fritz. If you don't want to play against the computer all the time, then you can play against real people online at http://www.freechess.org http://www.supreme-chess.com has a lot of information that will help you also.

Try getting a chess game for your PC then you can practice to your hearts content. Your local retailer should be able to get you one if they have none in stock.
