It depends on what year and model Olds you have. If it is a rear wheel drive it is easy but you'll need a tool called a tie rod separator that looks like a two pronged fork. First remove the cotter pin using a pair of needle nose pliers. Next, remove the castle nut. Drive the separator fork into the joint until it pops apart. Then, loosen the bolt closest to the tie rod end that you want to remove on the adjusting sleeve. Using a big pair of pliers unscrew the tie rod end from the adjusting sleeve while counting the number of turns. Screw the new end back in the same number of turns. Drop the stud into the hole.. tighten down the castle nut and put in a new cotter pin. If you have a front wheel drive car the outer tie rod end is replaced in this same way but, the inner tie rod end is more difficult and often requires some more specialty tools. Probably more cost effective to let a shop do it unless you can borrow tools from someone. It would be a good idea to have the alignment checked any time you replace a chassis part.

tie rod ends are easy to replace, that is what they line the front end up with. it will have to be realigned when you re finished. jack the car up. the end at the wheel has a cotter key remove it. and then the nut. break it loose and and back off on it til it is flush with the end. take a hammer and tap the nut til it breaks loose from the a frame. once it has dropped finish removing the nut. and it is the same thing on the other end. do one side at a time. below one is telling you to drop the tranny do not listen to him. he doesn't know what he is talking about. if you re not sure. go to auto zone or advance auto and get you a repair manual for about 12 bucks. if you need anymore info feel free to email me.
