I believe he is only caught up in the moment and having a good time and she is using him to get in the spotlight more. Typical hollywood style, huh? I think part of what is appealing to Nick about Vanessa other than her obvious good looks is she is the total opposite of Jessica.

vanessa seems like a smarter, sweeter more outgoing girl than that dumbass, jessica. it seems like Nick was really bummed out after the break-up. but who cares if he started to date vanessa right after, he deserves to be happy. it would seem out of character for nick to dump her after a year. he's probably ready to settle down and have kids.
