There are very few countries in the world in which The People are Sovereign. This means individual rights which we own. We created the Constitution, which creates Government, which hires bureaucrats, our public servants.

We own our own labor as "Property".

Government can't tax the exercise of a Right.

Being an American means that while we gripe about politics and having to spend taxpayer money trying to keep the rest of the world in some sort of order, deep in our hearts we know we are the sole remaining superpower and if things get weird enough we can wipe any other country off the map and the only thing which restrains us is conscience, and the fact that if we did, nobody would like us anymore.

Oh, wait, everyone hates us now.

OK, so being an American means not caring what the world thinks because the world is wrong. ;-)

Being an American is being comfortable with fairness, justice and freedom of speech. It is also serving our country in uniform representing the strength and heart of America. For me it is being 8 different nationalities, meeting others from different backgrounds working and living together in unity. Our strength is in our ability to worship the way we want, dress the way we want, talk the way we want and protect those who need help with doing the same. Being an American is appreciating those that gave their life and suffer for our freedom. Freedom is being able to wake up in the morning and say "I will be able to be anything that I work hard enough to achieve" It is possible in America.
