I need to send something to someone named Lynne, but I've never met this person, so I don't know whether it's a man or a woman. Most of the people named Lynne that I've met have been women, but I've also met a few men with this name.

This person is probably aged between 25 and 50. Do you think it's more likely that this person is a man, or a woman? How should I address them in the letter: Mr, Mrs, or Ms?

I'd assume you know their last name, so use that and/or just say Dear Lynne... Cause you don't wanna be wrong with the gender! ;-)

Just use Lynne. Or their first initial if it is more formal. I think the male version of Lynne is Lynn but you can never be sure these days. If it is really important, spend the time and find out from someone else before you send the letter.

How do you know the proper spelling, I'm female and my Lynn doesn't have the e on the end because I was named after my Dad's twin brother who didn't have an e on the end of his - you might be better to go totally generic and address it as RE: Per our phone conversation of August 17, 2006 or something along those lines, this way you don't offend regardless and it's professional and acceptable. Or address it to the title of the position such as Office of Human Resources - just some ideas after 20 years in the business world.

Dear Lynne (last name)

I'm guessing it's a woman because it ends in "e", but leaving off the MR/MS is probably the safest.

Dear Lynne, would be my first guess

this is always the problem with English names, they are so sexually ambiguous.

From what I've found, people with the spelling "lynn" were male and "lynne" was female, but this again is not always the case.

Sorry I can't help anymore

Just LYNNE SECOND NAME
and Dear Lynne to greet the person.
It is a tough one, really. How about to call on the phone and ask for MR LYNNE?...and so, you will know what the gender is.

You're right. I could go either way. Can you skip the Mr./Ms. and just use the person's name? "Dear Lynne,"? I know it's not as formal, but ......
