Since it is a depresant will it effect my breathing?

It will actually slow down your breathing. I have had two children and with both labors i had one. I would recommend it. Since there is less pain, you'll have less panic and less rapid breathing. Which could be better for your asthma. I loved it because i had more time to enjoy the baby after the delivery instead of being tiered.

In general, the same medications used during pregnancy are appropriate during labor and delivery.

Narcotic analgesics that cause histamine release should be avoided; fentanyl is a preferred agent. Lumbar epidural analgesia reduces oxygen consumption and minute ventilation during first and second stages of labor, which offers patients with asthma considerable benefit. If a general anesthetic is necessary, preanesthetic use of atropine and glycopyrrolate may provide bronchodilatory effect. For induction of anesthesia, ketamine is the agent of choice. Low concentrations of halogenated anesthetics can provide bronchodilation to the patient with asthma.

I have asthma and had an epideral. It went fine. In fact I think that I could have held my breath longer with the epideral than without but you should definatly talk to your doctor about it.

I don't think it would be a problem they will control the amount of medication you are getting but just let your dr know of your fears.

It shouldn't but if there is a complication you are going to be in the safest place and they can fix it quick.
