I have only heard of "Log Cabin Republicans" in the gay community?

Are there alot of them or just a few whacko's?

What is their reason for voting against their own rights?

I'm confused...

Statistically about 30 to 35% of gays vote Republican. In my experience many of them are very self-hating. Others (a much smaller number) are very wealthy -- and are supporting the Republicans because of their wealth. The remainder tend to be people that think that having people in both parties is good for gays and that someday, Republicans will come around and support gay rights if they are just loyal to the party now, while it wants to get rid of us.

Jonathan and I are Democrats, strongly -- but I used to be Republican, as was my family. I no longer agree with them on much of anything and am glad that I saw what was happening and switched to a party that supports human rights (not just gay rights, but human rights), that supports social and economic justice and that believes in a sustainable livable future for all mankind. I was a Republican because I was taught to be one by my family. I am a Democrat because I believe in their values.

To the person who said that Lefwingers don't speak for all gays -- you are right -- they speak for caring and responsible human beings -- regardless of who they sleep with.

Reynolds

Log Cabin Republicans are a gay organization with in the Republican party.

I am not one.

They are not whacko's. They are people that believe in the Republican party.

However, they also believe in Gay Rights. They work within the repulican party to promote gay rights. We need them!

Log Cabin Republicans do not support a the ammendment to the constituition to ban gay marriage. Log cabin republicans are for gay marriage.

Leftist Gays don't speak for all gays. They have hijacked gay politics and now many people think that just because you are gay you are a leftist radical. I think that does more harm than good.

I said before I am not a log cabin republican, but neither am I blindly zealous democrat. Republicans have some important things to say. I am against abortion, I want border security and I want to help big business. However I want education, gay marriage and earth friendly policies.

Well there is more to politics than sexual orientation and gay rights. The Log Cabin Republicans is a group of gay Republicans. Many gay people wonder the same thing you do. How can you be gay and Republican. The truth is, there are a lot of people who are more conservative than most of us, and while they don't support the oppression of gays, they support many of the economic, foreign policy and even social issues of the Republican Party..

Go figure!

They are an actual organized group.

"Log Cabin Republicans courageously stand on the front lines of today's most important battleground for gay and lesbian civil rights. We are the nation's leading voice for fairness, inclusion, and tolerance in the GOP.

Our party stands at a crossroads. The GOP must choose between fairness and freedom or intolerance and exclusion. Log Cabin works tirelessly to make sure the Republican Party chooses the right path. Ending up on the wrong side of history will cost the GOP for decades to come. So we tirelessly strive to achieve liberty and equality for all Americans."

It is possible to be both gay and an idiot. I'd say these folks qualify.

yes, log cabin republicans are gay republicans. Their symbol is (no joke) the pink elephant. They believe in the republican way of thinking (giving money to big buisness will allow money to "trickle down" to the lower classes) but they DO support homosexual rights and revolution. Just like dick cheney supports gay rights (because his daughter is a lesbian) but is still a republican.

The Log Cabn Republicans are republicans who believe in a lot of conservative issues like tax cuts, and smaller government, but gay rights is the major issue that they differ with the rest of the Republican party.

As far as I understand it, log Cabin Republicans are a group of gay persons that believe in most of the Republican platform, though not all of it. I don't know their membership. I suspect there are more than any official numbers would say.

Log Cabin Republicans are the eternal optimists of the Gay world...they think they can change the party from within..not going to happen. As long as there are those who think Gays want "special rights," it will be an uphill battle. Only militant rebellion will change people's thought patterns....fear is a great cause for real change. The Blacks did it in the 60's with "Burn Baby Burn," and the Gays are going to have to do it also...as long as I see stupid (Please note, I did not say ignorant...ignorance can be cured) people here making comments as I see in some of the answers here, we have no rights. Fear is the one thing we can do very, very well...the homophobes cannot recognize us, we are within their ranks, embedded in very good jobs, most of them work FOR US! Rioting and giving what we have gotten will set things on a very fast course towards equality. Good luck

I really just don't get it. I don't really think such a small fraction of "republicans" think they can change the minds of so many, right-wing, conservative bigots.
to me, it seems being a gay republican makes about as much sense as someone black being in the KKK. it's like sleeping with the enemy!
