All jellyfish are cnidarians - meaning that they contain cnidocysts (stinging cells). There are other organisms (comb jellies) which are not in the same phylum as cnidarians, but are related to them. Comb jellies look similar to jellyfish except that they are more conical than disk-shaped, and unlike jellyfish, they do not produce cnidocysts and thus do not sting. If comb jellies were what were found on the beach, then they would not be capable of stinging. The term "disk-shaped," however, describes a jellyfish more than a comb jelly, so I would assume the organism you are describing is a species of jellyfish.
