Are they real stories from people's actual lives, or are they made up strictly for inspiration? I'm reading one now...

Yes the stories are all real. I think the chicken soup for the soul books are awesome.

They are real stories worded beautifully to inspire you. I'm not sure if it's 100% true. They have to go through editors and publishers who want to sell the books. There might be some stretching and twisting, add a little button here, ribbons here, a little red rose there.... But the basic story are real.

like the one shotting incident. i didnt kno bout it till i read Chicken soup.
