It mainly depends on how much you want to spend. If you're serious about the hobby, then I'd suggest invesing in a good 6 inch newtonian/dobsonian reflector. You can get them fairly cheaply (less than $1000). This is a good starter scope and will help you to hone your skills and at the same time allow you to see some of the nicer near space objects in fair detal and some of the brighter deep space objects as well.
If you are just curious and do not know if you want to pursue the hobby further than passing interest, then a good set of binoculars will help you make your decision.
