(t+1)^2 = (t+1)*(t+1)

Using the FOIL method:
= (t*t) + (t*1) + (t*1) + (1*1)
= t^2 + t + t + 1
= t^2 + 2t + 1

(x+1)^2 turns into

(x + 1) (x + 1), which turns into (when foiled)

x^2 + 2x + 2
