It depends on the child. My daughter was sleeping with only 1-2 feedings at night when she came home from the hospital. Instead of listening to the doctors about feeding the newborn every 2-3 hours, I let her determine her feeding schedule. My mother always said to let a sleeping baby lie. The only time I ever woke her up is when she had fed too early before bedtime. Then I'd gently wake her and give her some milk. As with my other two, who were boys and ate considerably more at feedings, I gave her a little baby cereal with her milk when plain milk just wasn't doing it for her. She started on baby cereal at about 3 weeks. Also, play some soothing music or nature sounds while she sleeps at night, that may help.

My first child didn't really sleep through the night until he was 3, but my second child slept 11 hours by 5 months or so. There was even definite improvement by 4 months with waking maybe 2-3 times a night. A few things that I found helpful the second time around were getting the baby into a routine very early on, putting her down each night not totally asleep so she learned earlier how to put herself back to sleep when she woke at night and setting an early bedtime (even if you have to run up and down the stairs for a few weeks). Good luck!

My sons is 16 mo and just started to sleep through the night (9+ hours the night before last). He started waking up just 2-3 times around 14 mo.

I know a lot of people expect all babies to sleep through the night before 6 mo or whenever, but the truth is only 50% of babies are actually sleeping through by 12 mo. Mine was one of the other 50% that didn't sleep through until after 12 mo.

They still need to eat frequently thoughout the night, so they usually wake several times as long as they are still not eating solids. Also, "through the night" for an infant is considered 5 hours straight, so I wouldn't expect an 8 hour stint any time soon.

We co-sleep with our son and it is great! We have the crib attached to the side of our bed like a sidecar. Even though he wakes up to nurse every few hours or so, we both barely even wake up. I couldn't tell you how often he wakes cause I only wake enough to get him latched on and then fall back to sleep. He never cries at night because all he has to do is squirm a bit and I wake and feed him.

my baby boy starting sleeping through the night at about 3 months, and I believe he only woke up once through the night at a pretty earlier age... maybe 6 weeks to 8 weeks old? I forget. I also breastfed him, but switched to formula at around 3 months. I want to add that he began sleeping in his crib right away, so there were no changes that had to be made as he got older.

I have 4. Each was different. My now 8 year old was nearly 2!! We had a "family bed" for a while and it was not really a big deal for them to wake in the night. I breastfed all of them and had the basinet next to the bed for anyone who needed some "alone time".

On average, they starting sleeping through the night at about 8 months.

At about 2 months old she was sleeping 6 hours at night, then at 3 1/2 months she started sleeping 12 hours a night. I did start cereal with a spoon at 3 months, just make sure to put the infant supported sitting up, to prevent choking hazard.
