This may sound really vain and strange, but right now I own a volkswagen jetta that i recieved from my grandparents for free...the only problem is its automatic. I really want to supe up my car and make it nice and fast but to me I always thought manuals were the way to go. What do you guys think? are they really wimpy? my mom said I cant sell the car but I can change the transmission to Manual if i want, so if anyone knows what all is involved with that. Thanks for any advice

Cars having automatic transmission is a convenient and easy to drive vehicle which is good for city driving, where bumper to bumper traffic are part of daily life. Volkswagen is not a low quality car, although having automatic, it can drive or run more than 100 mph. Switching or converting the car to manual transmission is not required. If you do so, there maybe some technical problem to come. Your car is designed for auto transmission. Volks Jetta is a cool car for me.

Every answer you have recieved so far all seem vague and unhelpful. Here's the deal: You can convert an automatic jetta to a manual (I'm assuming you have the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine- the most common engine) however the repair is quite involved. I'm not sure what level of mechanical aptitude you possess but this job is only for those skilled in the art of the wrench. Be prepared for major costs as well- Transmission arent cheap, neither is the 10 or 15 hours of labor involved- thats not even counting new engine mounts, gaskets, fluids, etc.

If you want to soup up the the car but feel like the cost invloved with a tranny swap might be too much look at installing a performance chip. If your jetta is an A4 body style (99-05) then there are plenty of chips availible which will offer a performance oriented shift program for your car's transmission control module. Best of all the TCM can be reset to its factory settings very easily- so no one will be the wiser as to you modification. Otherwise my suggested mods would be (in order): A K+N performance air filter, perfromance exhaust system (Mine is made by Brauspeed) then maybe a perfromance camshaft with a duration of about 270 degrees (mine is made by Autotech.) As a GTI owner I have extensive experience with modified VW's and although an Automatic Transmission is a hinderance performance-wise, you still have a good fun car that you can get plenty of good times out of.

Question: What year is the car? What size is the engine (4 or 6 clyinder?)

It will be really expensive to change it to a manual tranny. VW are great cars, I own a GLI BMP. I am glad you are interested in modding your dub. Why dont you join a forum??? vwworld.forumup.org. There are alot of great people there that can help you during the process

Drive the car as it is and maintain it for as long as you can to keep a good resale value and while you are doing this save up for the car of your dreams and use this car as a trade in.
