My boyfriend has a habit of being loud and cursing a lot when we are in public. To me it is embarrassing because I am completely different. I am more conservative in public and I behave with a lot of class. Now don't get me wrong at home I can be loud, but that's in our home. He says that I am uppity. I feel there is a time and place for everything. What do you guys think? What does your mate do to embarrass you? **Best Answer 10pts"

My husband spits and does that crazy $h!t where he blows his nose on the side of the street. I am not making this up. I've asked him a million times to carry a hanky or use tissue, but he only listens everynow and then. The rest of the time he doesn't care.

My girlfriend doesn't really do anything to "embarrass" me as such, but we are from two completely different friend groups and sometimes things can clash. She is friends with a group of males, who, quite frankly, I trust completely because I can tell that they would never try anything on with her. Same for her. Anyhow, they're not exactly the most popular dudes at school, and, even though I'm not "the" most popular guy in school, I'm pretty much everybody's friend.

Anyhow, I find it quite embarrassing to go and talk to her when she's with her friends - I don't feel like I'm being judged or anything, but I'll just say they're into Live Roleplaying and Trading Cards games. My girlfriend isn't, but she hangs around with them because the rest of the girls in school are complete and utter bitches.

Other than that, we're pretty darn good.

There is a time and a place for everything, but he is never going to change. It is up to you to accept it or not to accept it. It is harsh, but reality. Some things you could do to make it work better would be to compromise: no cursing when we are at the party, but have fun being yourself when we go out with our friends to dinner.

My boyfriend is a dancer and breaks out in songs and dances and shenanigans whenever he feels like it. I am very professional and come from a family where manners were drilled into us. I can curse like a sailor and be the life of the party when I am with my close friends, but when I am in public I like to be noticed for my brains, not anything else. His dancing and singing makes me noticed because everyone wonders what he is doing. How we have compromised is that I send him to the studio in the morning to get it out of him. When he has had hours of physical activity in the morning he can be "more presentable" when I need him to be and we fight less because he is less of a pain and I am less of a b*tch.

Good Luck!

It's never really right to lower yourself to his standards, but a couple of times it was the only way for me. My husband would use the f word loudly in public, like a store with little kids all around. So, when I was with him (not in front of kids), I did the same and it really embarrassed him. Then once he spit on the sidewalk; I hocked one up and spit myself. He was disgusted! Every time he spit, I spit too (not as well:)) Then he stopped!

I understand that a lot of people act differently in public than they do in private. Sometimes they come out of their shell or become very reserved.

In your case it seems that he likes to express himself loudly and by your becoming a bit more serious than he probably feels a little immature. As long as you don't become more reserved as a means of making him feel bad about himself or feel childish than I don't see why he should have a problem.

Simply tell him you're more shy than he is. As for me, my mate has a tendency to tell the most stupid, idiotic and corny jokes when we happen to be in front of hip, chic people who pride themselves on their witty or interesting conversation topics. It's embarrasing when he does that, especially because no one laughs and I have to pretend that I found it funny or risk his feeling dumb.

My husband has a tendency to slip off his shoes when sitting, and his feet don't smell all that good. To me, it not the right time for that in public or in a friend's house.

Guess you have to decide what your comfort level is and if you can handle the stares you get when his behavior happens.

I am choosing to live with my man's stinky feet.

My ex was loud & obnoxious like that. When we were in the grocery check out line he'd yell at the top of his lungs "honey, I forgot to get the 'H', my Preparation H!! My 'roids are flaring up!!!.
I'm now with a much more reserved man.

Ahh, yes. My husband is SOOO not very "civilized" it's not funny. On the other hand I'm very consiverative and don't like to be the focus of attention. My husband swears and makes it a point to voice his opinion on very controversial subjects VERY loudly so that other people can hear him. Usually the people he is VENTING about too. One of these days I'm just waiting for someone to confront him and make an even bigger scene. ...great....
