I would say "its the starter," but you fixed it. So, next in line is the battery and battery cables.
You can get the cable parts cheap at Wal-Mart or most other stores.
Good luck!

Check the battery cables for corrosion inside of the insulation that covers them. The corrosion can creep up the battery cable inside of the insulation and you will not see it unless you remove some of the insulation to check. The corrosion will cause much more resistance in the circuit which makes the cable overheat and smoke. If there is corrosion inside of the battery cable insulation, replace the cables.
Update: Cut and remove some of the insulation from the negative cable that you say is brown. Does the brown color go back into the insulation further than an inch? If so, this is a corrosion problem, replace the cables, they are not allowing enough current to flow through the corroded material.

Just because the battery is "new" doesn't mean that it is good. Who knows how long it was sitting on the shelf before you bought it. Get the battery tested where you bought it. It might have a bad cell. And if that's the case, it won't put out enough voltage to engage the jack shaft and turn the motor over. I saw this same thing happen only a month ago.

starter relay or starter solenoid. I would also check for any bare wires. It sounds like you have a open circuit though it happened to me when my stater relay fried. I wish you the best
And there also right about changing out your battery cables now for sure I also had to do that. That is very important!!

Its the battery. some circumstances the battery you purchase might want to not be all that solid. I had one for 6 months and it went thoroughly lifeless. Thank God I knew the adult men on the shop i purchased it at. They replaced it for me free of charge. verify that first and attempt now to not go away your lights or radio on. The little issues in existence are continually those that get us the most! LOL =)

I think Honey is right. Check to make sure you are properly connected. Are you sure the neg battery cable is smokin'? Or is it the fusible link that is smokin'?
