Why is it called "coming out of the closet"? I get the "coming out," part, but I really don't get why they had to throw the closet in there...why not some other kind of enclosed space?

maybe because when people hide stuff its usually in a closet? im not really sure, kinda like the term 'skeletons in the closet'..i guess its cause they were hiding the fact they were gay from the world..but who knows thats just my opinion.

Well let's see: Do any of these phrases sound better?

1. Coming out of the toilet.
2. Coming out of the garbage can.
3. Coming out of the septic tank.
4. Coming out of the ash tray.

I think not... What's wrong with the closet?

The idea is that two people can go off into a closet and
do something unmentionable and not get caught.

I suppose ONE person could even do unmentionable things
in the closet, probably even more comfortably.

I'm sure the reference is to some homosexual couple
trying to hide their activities in the closet and the terminology
just caught on.

I'm going to just have to go ahead and agree with most of the answers here that it's because everyone has "skeletons" in their closet..for a gay person their sexuality is that "skeleton" until they come to terms with themselves and are comfortable to begin telling the ones around them hence the term coming out of the closet

ok. the closet has cloth, right?but people will rarely look into your closet, instead they will see what you wear after you've been there. So that's an analogy: the difference between what you have and what you show. So like the cloth you keep in the closet, you wear it, and you come out, showing who you really are.

Katies is rigth. People hide things they don't want anyone else to see in the closet. Hence the term, coming out.

"hi, i just came out of the cupboard!"

i think that closet was chosen because gay people are forced to hide themselves and who they are in order to protect themselves. the closet has always been a common hiding place when anyone physically needs to hide themselves.

it just means that when you say you are a closet something...for example im a closet pervert lol...no seriously i am! its refering to the fact that you dont wish to share your personal preferences with anyone else. so coming out the closet means you are ready to share it with the world.
