Here is the situation: I hurt my knee and it became swollen and filled with fluid. I called an orthopedic MD and made an appointment for Fri. @ 2:30pm. I work different shifts every day so there is no way for me to schedule something for a time when I'm not working since I don't know my schedule more than 1 week in advance. I called my work and told them about the appointment so that they would not schedule me after 2pm. I work 40 hrs every week but since I have to leave early on Friday I am only scheduled to work 36.5 hrs. I called HR to find out if I could use sick time to cover the other 3.5 hrs and explained the story to them. They said that there is no real policy on sick time, just that it is "up to the discretion of the manager." I asked the manager of my dept and she said it was ok since I never call in sick. I told the person that does payroll on Sun. about it and she said she wouldn't do it unless the store manager approved it and also that she didn't think that he would.

I will be really annoyed if I don't get the sick time. Just on principle. If I hadn't told them about the appointment and just called in that day then I would get a whole day off with pay.

I wouldn't really have to "save" my hours since its a use it or lose it type thing. And they don't tell you how many hours you have, its just suppose to be there when you need it.
