what type of person does it take to stand up for things they dont believe in? I don't just mean petty things, but why can't people be more vocal and willing to stand up for their rights instead of saying that's life but make complaints when things don't go their way? human nature? What name? Why can't more peoplp have the courage to do this? And then when others speak out, why do these same people get angry because changes may occure that will help them? (And I am aware that there are many vocal peole who speak out against wrong douings, but the majority seems too afraid, and too obvilious to know they are afraid.) Is it selfishness? Reputation? Fear? Self Preservation? What do you think? As radicals, rebels, revolutionaries less common or less covered by the media as they were in the past? are they still around as much as they were in the past? I hope this makes sense, lol. Sometimes The questions arent as clear as I thought them up to be, so work with me here

Rebels and Radicals are mostly born as such. Their personality is such sometimes by birth sometimes by environment.

Rebels radicals and revolutionaries still exist as before, however they exist as such only at a personal level. They have rebellious feelings and wish to revolutionarize however there are some reasons cause of which they cant - like -
1. they are too many things in the world today, and people cant seem to focus their energy, time and effort on a few of them. we want to do everything and have everything and be everything.. there is no time or no energy left to speak out.. we all want to speak out.. but we find other things to do such as work, relationships, kids, entertainment..
in earlier days there wasnt so much to do ... there was no entertainment other than radio.. that also came later .. there were more stronger causes to speak out and also lesser causes..
nowadays with so much going on, not everyone can be satisfied.
if we really think of reasons to speak out, there will be hundreds.. we cant do it all.
2. all of the reasons u just listed.. fear of punishment, fear of social ostracizing. fear of being talked about negatively..
3. there is more to lose today. the revolutionaries of yesterday had not much to lose.. it couples with fear
4. when a child shows signs of a rebel, or disobedient behaviour, or speaks loud of what he thinks is wrong, he is mostly conditioned in such a way to not show his feelings so loud.
there is a new concept called diplomacy which is very wrongly taken as not speaking out!!
5. most people are just lazy.. they rather take the harm than speak out against it.. perhaps they have tried once and it backfired so they just dont want to waste more energy on speaking out. its not lack of courage but perhaps too much laziness.
6. people are afraid no one is going to speak out with them.. they are going to be the only one against many others..

everyone is just ignoring reality!! we dont want to face it.. cause its harsh and theres already too much of stress..

they say its easier to walk with the crowd than to walk the other way

perhaps this is an unclear answer to an unclear question..
what are uexactly pointing at? something to do with politics and the people?

We fear the power we have to bring change. Change is different from that which is known, that which has been previously experienced and mapped. Our neurophysiology is geared for statistical prediction based on previous experience, so we make delusions of how things should be but never can, we know everything must change as time goes on, but we want it to change so that it stays the same (predictable/comfortable). Thus we have an expectation based on past experience which is unrelated to the unique and perviously unexperienced moment you find yourself in. Our wants will undoubtubly be crushed by whatever unexpected change turns up next. We then complain because we were not content with how it was and are not content with how it turned out. This is the essence of the first noble truth in Buddhism, life is suffering.

Not certain I understand your question, as it is rather incohesive. I guess most people don't actually fear change, it is radical change, which is the opposite of rational change that people fear. There is nothing wrong with tweaking the bugs out of problems, but there is something wrong with not examing completely your point of view before trying to make it happen, as unforseen adverse effects can certainly happen....take for example, many of the people here do not support Bush for the wars we have faced, but think of the alternative, lets say a liberal was in charge, we would probably have to bow down by now and face mecca...I say we stay strong and dont have a complete change in our policies quite yet.

first of all Most Peope are afraid of what they don't understand. Most people Don't Understand CHANGE. They only know they want a better life...not nessecarily how to attain it! We as Americans have an obligation to stand up for our Rights and those of others. Being the most "powerful" nation on the planet!!!
Also as we know alot of humans prefer to live life in a rose glass bubble...sad but true...we all need to be the 'HERO' but we can't make the costume. Planet raping piledging of human and ciil rights has been a constant plague for humanity. One we must overcome...if we want our children to have the same # of fingers and toes...etc...bdbdbd thats all folks!!!

Some people are ""All Talk and No Action." They really like to hear the sound of their own voice. Those type of people have to talk big in order for them to feel big. Be it because of low self-esteem, no self-worth, no confidence. In a way you have to look at them as having problems which they need to get help for and work on. Well...that is just one of the reasons of what I think

It's ironic that those iconoclasts that stand up and steer the course of our society aren't fit to join it. Wheather it's fear or common sense that makes a man conform to the will of society it is what they must do to participate in that society. What makes a rebel think his voice is more significant than the millions? Who decides who is an obstacle to progress and who is a visionary?

The thing is, whenever people do stand up enough and change things they are often faced with an even worse reality than they knew before. There's the thing about responsibility too...the more you know the more you're responsible for. Lot's of people tend to prefer to stay happily ignorant and not responsible.

not just one reason. ever heard the term "ignorance is bliss"? herd mentality. as long as i am part of the herd i am less likely to be singled out and punished. if i stand up and let them know that i disagree with the things that are happening i will give them a target. what people dont realize is that eventually you will do something to draw attention to yourself and there will be no one left to stand up for you because you wouldnt stand up for them.

WHy scared?
Because people want to be safe, and they think that anything one person does is futile or close to that.
Why expect change?
Because they don't like something, and they expect that the world as a whole will react to that to make the change

I think that people just feel like their voices won't be heard. I don't think that people understand the power they have through their voices, if more people stood up for what believed in, this world would be a different place.
