Yahoo is not a state sanctioned service. That is, it is not
controlled by the Constitution's first ammendment.

Even if it was run by the state or federal government,
the freedom of speech is not absolute.
You cannot scream "fire" in a crowded theater.
Such things as libel, obscenity and inciting people
to violence are not protected.

Generally speaking (outside the confines of certain forums like this one), our freedom of speech has taken a huge hit in the last 5 years. Part of the problem is that the Fourth Estate failed to step up when it was most needed. Another part is the lack of critical thinking among Americans. There is a complacency that has allowed the public to be easily assuaged by propaganda, especially if the issues are clothed in hot-button topic items (like abortion, Gay Rights, Medicare, flag burning).

In regards to these boards, there has been too much latitude in some of the posts, especially when one considers this is an open forum to people of all ages including children. That means, some of the more graphic subject matter is being accessed by those who do not have the emotional maturity to process or understand these ideas. While in one respect, this is in line with the open (now naive) belief set of the web many years ago, it seems inappropriate, if not dangerous (due to increased access) to expose young people to some of these topics.
One would not post graphic pornography in a high school library, for instance, yet some of the language (in addition to some links to provocative sites) here in Answers is just as graphic and more easily accessed. No surprise, the subject of sex seems to be quite popular.
If yahoo! was an exclusive site where there was an age requirement, perhaps these topics would not be a problem. But yahoo! has no age requirement assigned and is a public forum. It is implied that people will comport themselves in a way similar to that which they would in any other public area.
Most people do a fairly good job of reporting these instances when they are seen, however, infractions still happen frequently.

Personal freedom and the latitude to say what you want, when you want, to friends, family, or others close to you is different from freedom in a public setting, or a public forum. A different level of maturity, responsibility and unselfishness is involved, because folk do not all share the same sensitivity or strength. The speaker or writer operates to include as many folk as possible, rather than offend and shut people out (or up). Freedom of speech, especially when sharing a joke, also involves discharging a duty for good taste. Some of us are better at doing our duty than others.... Grow in grace.

“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

This is not an adults only site.It is moderated, to filter out unsuitable questions and to prevent things getting out of hand.
People with unsuitable questions, can take them to the adult rated message boards, where someone might be interested.
Most of those sorts of questions, appear here two or three times a week on average. Then the complaints are noted and the questions vanish.
But always there are more.Feel free to ask your questions, but be careful what you say.Because the Moderator has freedom of the delete button.

Good question. I think it may be that you are considered a guest in yahoo space as you might be a guest at a party or something. If you get too obnoxious at a party you can be thrown the hell out. I am a strong believer in freedom of speech though so I am glad that you brought up this great question.

Yahoo probably thinks that your only doing that stuff on purpose to offend someone, not really stating anything serious. For example, if you were talking about the KKK, yahoo would think that you were saying it just for the heck of it. Beyond Yahoo, Freedom of speech does exist because you had the "freedom" to say it, but people didn't take it in or didn't take it seriously.

No that really doesn't go against freedom of speech, because people also have the right to not be harassed. Yes, you should be able to say what you want, but you need to be respectable to other people.

No, freedom of speech is not a joke. There has to be some limits due to decency and expectations when the place speech is being placed is private and owned and operated by someone that has defined those limits. Then it is your decision whether or not to support that business.

Freedom of speech is not a joke, men and woman have died protecting it. The people who think its a joke are the liberal politically correct crowd. Political correct is a joke not freedom of speech
