Can I use a booster? Do I need retrofit? Do I need the old kind or the new kind? My dad said after so many years the "freon" just gets used up. Do I have to check for a leak or is it unsafe to just boost it? Boost it or use actual ferigerant? R-12 or R-134 or neither?

R-12 is what was originally in the vehicle if it has not been converted. You now must be licensed to handle R-12 and it is very expensive. I would suggest converting it to R-134a. You have a leak somewhere in the system, as freon does not get "used up" when the A/C system is operating. Have it checked for a leak and retrofitted to R-134a.

That was an R-12 system. You will want to evacuate the system, put in 2 oz of ester oil, put in 1 oz of line conditioner, and fill the rest of the system with r-134a. It will take around 16 oz. of refrigerant. Good luck.
