I'm afraid so.
The reality is that America is not just the wealthiest country in the world, it's also militarily the most powerful, has the most R&D (reaserch and development) and exports its culture to every corner of the world, just to point out a few ways in which America leads.
That's why the rest of the world takes an interest in what's happening in America and sometimes might be a bit to critical, because although the rest of the world has, for example, no say in who's the president, they have to live with the decision made by Americans for better or worse.
America is indeed a leader yet it doesn't lead well.
America refuses to cooperate internationally with other countries. It refuses Kyoto, the International Criminal Tribunal, the ban on land mines, the ban on nuclear testing, the ban on bio chemical weapons, just to name a few...
It's also the stingiest international donner amongst rich nations. In 2004 it only contributed 0.17% of its GDP versus 0.87% from Norway. In this categorie it ranked last below even Portugal (considered to be the poorest of the rich) which contributed 0.69%.
Therer will come a day when China and India will be as powerful (if not more) than America. When that day comes and these countries start behaving the same way...

Ever since Al Gore claimed to have invented the internet I have to chuckle every time he makes a statement. However, I think there is some truth to this one. Everytime there is a crises (either war or a natural disaster) the world looks at America and pressures us to "do something about it".

No, America is the world's strongest and viable nation. We lead some follow, some don't.
As if a mother duck lead the way and several of her chicks were lead astray.
We lead economically with the strongest economy the world has ever known but soon to be surpassed by the Cinese.
We lead in the like to being ahead of, rather than being followed. The rest of the world does not follow us.

World's leader in what?? In some things yes, a leader. In some things not the leader.

As an aside, people really need to get over the "i created the internet thing" Sheesh that was years ago and not nearly as dumb a mistatement as the 100's Bush has made.

We are in a position to lead. We should lead. We don't always lead. If Al Gore had been elected, he promised to make sure all of the above became false.

Al Gore said he invented the Internet. Take whatever he says with a bit of skepticism

He is correct insofar as America is the world's only superpower, but we do not lead the world anywhere. Most of the world does not have a strong affinity for us; many go so far as to say they hate the US, and they are not without reason.

If Al Gore said "Grass is green", I'd be SURE to go see for myself.
He's even admitted to stretching the Truth in his little make-believe movie.

Maybe you should find yourself a better public figure to listen to....

He might be right but we need to step down from that position. We are not responsible for the world. That responsibility is hurting us. We only need to assume a leadership role during real crisis like WW2
