Yup, its called "Barrets syndrome".
Basically, if the acid from your stomac is continually sloshing
up into your throat, the tissue changes to be ... essentially like
the stomac.
That's Barrets syndrome.
It is considered a "pre-cancerous" state. That is, people
who have it rarely do not then develop some sort of
esophigial cancer.

If you have persistent heartburn, and have had it for a long time, you should see your doctor for a scope of your esophagus. Barrett's esophagus is a precancerous state, and if left untreated, can turn to cancer. Prilosec once a day, over the counter, often relieves this heartburn and heal any erosion that has developed. If you can't afford to buy this over the counter, which needs to be taken everyday, one tablet. Then your doctor may prescribe something that your insurance can cover. Don't leave this untreated. My son's pre-school teacher died from this and he was in his late 40's. He left it untreated.

Acid reflux from the stomache up the throat (heartburn), caused by erosion of the gullet valve, can cause inflamation and scar tissue in the throat. There is a possibility that this scar tissue MAY become cancerous if not treated. Ranitidine once a day from you Doctor/GP will reduce the amount of acid in your stomache and prevent reflux. (I'm not a Doctor but have had a similar problem for years until I took Ranitidine) Hope the information helps.

Yes, heartburn or "GERD" gastro-esophageal reflux disease will burn away part of the esophagus over time if left untreated. This will cause a change in the tissue at a cellular level. These "changed" cells will reproduce. It's called Barrett's esophagitis and is a form of cancer.

I have heard (radio) of acid-reflux disease that can become deadly if allowed to continue for a long period of time without some intervention.
Please use google or another search engine with "heartburn" "esophagus" "acid-reflux disease" and similar for help.
From the readings above, it looks like some really great advice! Some medical personnel did answer your question. Good luck to you!

"Heartburn" is caused by stomach acid leaking back up into the oesophagus (gullet). If this goes on for a long time, in can cause cancer.
