Does anyone know of a relatively affordable way to get something patented?

go to local patent office and get free booklet it taked a bit of reading but then you can take idea back and research if it is not already patented.

I'm trying to get a patent and right now discussing it with a lawyer, I hope i won't have to foot a huge bill!
