They resist any information from the outside world because it causes their lies to be challenged. Ignorant people tend to believe whatever they hear but when you show someone alternatives their minds begin to function and challenges are made to authority. That is why there was so much anti-war activity in the 50's and 79's. The people could see abuse in south east Asia and the waste that occurred there but the media did not give the Gi's a fair evaluation. Instead of attacking the military the public should have kept their anger directed at the politicians that were holding back the military.

Their religious philosophy required all truly pious people to live as Mohammed did during the Hegira (7th century AD). If it didn't exist then, it was rejected. This also explains why they treat women as they did and so on.
That didn't seem to extend to guns and missles, though, eh?
