Next summer, after I graduate highschool me and a couple of friends will be living in Italy for a year. We already know what we need to do and have our financial situation in order and everything, but one thing we don't really have planned is the fact that while we're living in Italy we want to see as much as Europe as possible. I've already been to Italy, France, and Switzerland but my friends have not (and I would love to go again also) and would like to see the other two countries plus many more (Spain, Greece, Austria, Slovenia and so on). The thing is, we don't know how to go about it. We figured on staying in youth hostels....but we just don't know whats the best thing to do. Have any of you ever done anything like this? If yes, could you please give me some advice or maybe a website to go to. Thanks!

armiki....sounds like I'm asking for advice. And if I was going to brag, why would I brag to people I don't even know?

Sounds like you are going to have a great time. Don't forget the passports. They usually have lots of buses making tours to different places. Have fun.

first of all...

become a member of Hostelling International. it's not exactly expensive and the discounts are worth it. I believe they have a student discount. (the website can be found on google).

then you might want to register at a Hospitality Club - hospitalityclub.org (easy enough) is cool. you could ask someone who lives in a city you want to visit to give you a tour or tell you where the best places to visit/eat/etc. are. some people use that site to actually find (free) rooms to stay in, but that could be a bit dangerous. hostels are cheap anyway :)

further regarding hostels - check out websites for special deals, etc. switzerland has a great hostel site (youthhostel.ch, easy enough)... the link to the english language site is tiny but it's there.

finally... how are you going to travel? Eurail passes are expensive but if you're going to travel by train a lot, they're much cheaper than buying a full price ticket separately every time.

hope this helps :)

oh, and browse wikitravel.org - don't *rely* on it for anything, but it's usually informative and occasionally hilarious... among other things, apparently, don't visit Venice in the summer, because there's more tourists than residents and the canals stink :)

and another note - read "Under the Tuscan Sun" and "A Year in Provence" - I hear they're really good books and they're essentially travel guides :)
