My husband and I are starting a business building a specific thing for a room in your home. We are just starting and not even sure if it is going to take off. Does he need to be licensed to build, is he considered a contractor? Any idea on how much it cost to becomes licensed, if so?

most likely if you're doing something heavy like construction, you would need a license to perform that kind of work. he would be considered self employed. for CA, to be a license contractor you must take certain amount of courses and have a specific amount of experience. Whatever cost you incur to get your license, you can write that off.

if it's not necessarily construction, if it's more molding and trimmings then i would buy liability insurance to protect you guys.
