A friend was actually just dealing with this same issue. Her mother is an editor, and so for her birthday, my friend found editions of newspapers and magazines that came out the day or week that her mother was born. She put quite a bit of work into the research (mostly on Ebay and in university libraries), but I'm sure that you could do a similar tribute if you were interested. A lot of the Life Magazines from the era are actually quite beautiful, and she found that the gift was able to give a unique perspective as to the journey that her mom and her generation have had.
Good luck in your brainstorming! :)

When my Mom turned 50, I took her to a chocolate brunch in a hotel in the city where we both live. What it is basically is a buffet brunch where everything is made of chocolate. Chocolate covered fruits, chocolate crepes, chocolate to drink, chocolate pizza, chocolate everything. I know that several different hotels in different cities do this, so if there's one near you, and if you live close to your mother or are willing to travel (oh, and if neither one of you is diabetic!) this is great option. Just google it and see what you can find near you! We had a great time!
Another idea is if you live in a place near an art college, lots of the time at the end of a semester (and this is the end of a summer semester) the school will put up a student show or have a student sale. You can pick up great art, from abstract paintings to blown-glass vases, relatively cheaply. I buy all kinds of gifts at these sales, and they are all unique and beautiful!

I like the idea of a scrapbook or a memory book. Do you have access to old photographs and things like that? You could put together something very nice. Card shops also sell booklets that cover "years" like 1956. Inside they tell about what movies were popular that year, how much a gallon of milk cost, etc.
If you know you Mom's favorite colors, food, etc., you can add that into the book. Then, add photos of you and other family members.
If you don't have time for that, I suggest a nice photo/frame. Maybe of you and your siblings on one side and one of your mom when she was younger or with her siblings. It's a nice memory and keepsake.
I hope your mom has a wonderful birthday!

A silver charm bracelet with different charms you select with special memories.
A red hat, because at 50 you can join the red hat club, there are red hat books and an on line store for the Red Hat Society.
A special day with you, take her out to eat and shopping or something she enjoys.

There are some cool personalized poems, that you can either choose from a selection, or write your own and they engrave them. There's one from Daughter to Mother where there's a place to put a photo of the two of you next to the poem. I think gifts like this mean more to moms at milestone birthdays.

Why not try something like this book that you write your memoirs to your mom then she can put hers in also, you can put pictures and old concert tickets or just about anything that will remind her of your time together. If that's too mushy try getting her a massage seat for her chair at work or a day at a day spa.

you can write her 50 nice things that she has done for you that made you what you are now put it in nice index cards and put it a nice box, or try to get some good photos and have it transferred to a cloth and have it made into a quilt. i dont think you can buy the first one online and i dont think you have enough time for the quilt. ONLINE maybe you can get her a book about mothers and daughters

A gift certificate to a day at a spa where she will be pampered. Most women would love this, but not spend the money on themselves.

A gift certificate for something she might not buy for herself, like a several-day retreat at a nice spa.
