I think work ethic is a lifestyle. You learn it from your parents or your environment. You are not born with it... it is acquired. Work ethic is further driven by a desire to excell. So, as you suggested, if you feel passionate about something, you will typically do better at it. However a person with a strong work ethic will be on time for class and complete assignments even if they don't care much for the class.
Let me make a suggestion to you... even though there will be some classes you need that don't excite you, try to take a few electives that will make school more enjoyable for you. Get involved in extracurricular activities. Try to find some time to hang out with friends. A well-rounded student makes time for work, study, and play. It is very important to participate in things you enjoy in order to live a well-balanced and fulfilled life. The same rule applies even after you graduate.

Well, you should ask yourself if you're in the right place, doing what you should be doing. We feel passionate about things when we really like them and we're good at them, that way you can focus all your energies towards that goal and don't waste any more time. That's the first thing you should do, find out what it is you really like to do. Because somehow you're right, it's harder to show work ethics if you do not feel strongly about the work you do.

I don't think I was born with the work ethic. It's the age-old question of nature vs nurture. My parents raised me to do my work, and honor my commitments, to go to work daily and to rarely call of sick. When you find something you really want to learn, you, too, will take off! My parents wanted me to be a teacher. In college I just got average grades. But then I got turned on to nursing and put myself thru nursing school with flying colors. I wish the same kind of luck for you.

work ethic is really just an attitude. you dont have to be passionate about your work to work hard. my mother gave 100% to a job she hated for years until she found something better

I think it's a little of both. Find something you like and work hard on it....At least try. It's a mind thing.
