Wow, I did A-level french and the only trip I got was a trip to the college up the street. Seeing as I was the only student doing french I dont see why I couldnt have gone to france for awhile!
There was a rumour that my french "class" would get to go to France but I think they said that so that I'd take the course. The history class got to go though hmmm.
If you do go (and i hope you have fun if you do) it will most likely be for 2 weeks in one of the half term holidays and you'll probably be taking other courses and other teachers wont be impressed if you miss their lessons. Your college may do an exchange where you go to a school in france for a month or maybe longer but that wont be until you've learnt enough higer level french.

I'm at uni studying french, italian and spanish so i guess i can tell you what im going through! language degrees are typically 4 years long which includes a year abroad (of which i am about to go on!) In most places this year is in the third year. You would go for the year although in real terms this depends. Some people choose to be a student and so they are gone for the academic year whereas others work either as a language assistant or other forms of work and so this all depends on your job.
At some places, if you start a language at a beginners level they make you do this year abroad in the second year but this is rarely for french, more italian.
hope this helps :)

This depends on the school. Best is to go in your junior year and go for the whole year. The reason for this is that by then you'll speak the language well enough AND you'll be ready for a break from your school. Also, a semester is simply too short. Just as you are getting immersed in the language and culture you leave. So go for a year.
If your school doesn't have its own programs then I recommend looking into either the Paris or the Geneva programs of Smith College.

I'm a French teacher. This will all depend on the requirements of your college and what major you choose. If you choose to major in French, I would say that going for as long as possible is all to your benefit.

thats a tricky one to answer, it depends on the college and how long your term time is, also, it's not compulsory to go to France, it's only advised to do so.
If you are raising concerns about going there then you should really try to seek out advice on whrer to go as there are various parts of the country that have a history of live-in-teaching.
hope it works out for you either way.
