I'm a huge Yankee fan and some of my best friends are Red Sox fans, we get along great.
I been to plenty of Yankee - Boston games at the stadium and I get along great with the Boston fans as long as they are not using fowl language and acting like a fool.
You can cheer for your team anywhere you want be show a little respect and everyone will have fun.

The rivalry doesn't seem to be as bitter as it once was, at least among the players...many of whom (as you mentioned) are friends. Even among fans I think there is some respect. Although there certainly are diehards who believe there is a moral code against getting along. The media doesn't help matters by needlessly adding fuel to the NY/Boston competition.

For most if us it's just playful fun, but some people are just hateful and will jump at any opportunity to hate someone that doesn't believe in the same thing that they do.

because there is nothing better than a great rivalry. yeah sure they go a little overboard but thats the fun. nothing better than getting in someones face when their team gets spanked by yours. trash talking is great too.
