Grey is a neutral so yes you can. Neutrals like black, white and gray can be worn with anything. The pants don't have to have the same pattern as the jacket. They can be solid and still go.

Yes a darker pants goes pretty good with a lighter top but not the other way around

i think it would look fine together...the only thing i think looks bad is people wearing blaid with stripes or something stupid like that...but what you are saying sounds good together...
