Of course we need each other! That is the principle that our country is based on, I only wish that there were more than 2 parties because I am a conservative and there are some things that I don't think that my party is being conservative enough on!

We all need our comedic foil...
Seriously though, they tend to keep the others fringe elements in check. Unfortunately, in doing this they generalize the entire party as the fringe elements which leads to ideas like: with conservatives everyone will be a fascist and with liberals everyone would be a communist. More realistically, things wouldn't be too much different with just one party or the other in change; sure, liberals would introduce more social programs and conservative would slim the federal government, but these changes would be minor. The group in charge would splinter into its extreme ends which would monitor itself, so it wouldn't get too extreme.
Just for fun now, lets postulate what it would be like if we had just libertarians...

Sure it's good to have balance between liberal and conservative. However, it's a fact that the entire spectrum has moved rightward in the last 20 years. And the right wing is very far right. Some would say the far right is fascist, I disagree. But the fact that this term even comes up now indicates how far right the right has gone.

Yes, we need that balance. There are extremes on both sides. Both sides also bring positive views/policies to the table. Some fo the best (read notable) presidents haved exhibited policies on both sides of the spectrum-- TR, Clinton, Lincoln, Kennedy, etc.
But I think you're reaching a bit. I don't think cons would lead us to more of a fascist country nor would we be more socialist/communist with libs. You're thinking that the extremes would win out eventually.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a communist-leaning society, and I doubt conservatives think there is anything wrong with a fascist-leaning society. We'd all get what we want, and we'd be happy.

Yes they do...I prefer life without either... Not true Liberals make great pets once they are house broken and neocons are just fun to watch as they run around and hide calling everything and everyone a terrorist.
(sorry, dapix had such a good answer thought we could all use a laugh)

The American Government is unable to accomplish the most simple of of tasks because of infighting. Congress continually votes for initiatives they know their constituents don't want or oppose legislation that would help them to tow their party line or oppose the rival party. I think both need to step asside and let people who want to have a democracy step forward.

I think Democrats and Republicans keep each other balanced. I believe we could all do with a lot fewer Far left and right wing folks though.
