We have tried soaking in water with downy and washing along with hanging outside to dry on the sun porch, our next move is soak in a mixture of white vingar/hot water and use liquid tide to wash and air dry again.

you need to rid the smell, not cover it up

i would fill the washer with hot water, add a cup of baking soda and a quarter cup of vinegar and let it soak for a while....a couple of hours at least.
Drain the washer, spin it out, and refill before sending it through the regular wash, i believe that should be enough to deodorize your clothing

I've never smelled moth balls.... I tried once but I could not get his little legs apart

Get Moth Balls....you can get them in a grocery store in the laundry deptarment.

try joyful gain detergent it smells great!also try putting them in the dryer afterwards with a great smelling dryer sheet and use a bunch of them!
